Drop all charges against Nabeel Rajab and unconditionally release him from jail

Nabeel was sentenced to three months imprisonment after he was accused of libel and using social networking site twitter to "insult the citizens of Muharraq." These accusations stem from tweets he posted on 2 June 2012 in which he called on the Prime Minister to resign citing corrupt practices.

While in detention Nabeel has lodged an appeal against his three month-sentence which is expected to heard on 5 August 2012.

Ales Bialiatski wins Norwegian ‘Freedom of Expression’ award

The imprisoned leader of the Human Rights Center “Viasna” Ales Bialiatski has been awarded the Freedom of Expression award by the Norwegian Authors´ Union (“Den norske Forfatterforening”).

The award is to promote the activities of human rights defenders, journalists and writers who fight for freedom of expression in unfree countries. According to the Norwegian Authors´ Union, the award is recognition of Ales Bialiatski’s work and the high objectives pursued by Viasna activists.

BELARUS: Human rights defender Ales Bialiatski sentenced to 4.5 years of imprisonment, a sad day for the defence of human rights in the world

Paris-Geneva, November 24, 2011. The Observatory for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders, a joint programme of the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH) and the World Organisation Against Torture (OMCT), condemns the sentencing to prison of Mr. Ales Bialiatski, FIDH Vice-President and President of the Human Rights Centre (HRC) “Viasna”, and denounces it as a move to silence the Belarusian civil society.

Ales Bialiatski is a Belarusian political activist with the Viasna Human Rights Centre and Vice-President of the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH). Due to his work assisting victims of political terror and dispatching independent information on the situation in Belarus since 1996, Ales has suffered a long series of arrests, detentions and other forms of harassment. He was arrested on tax evasion charges on 4 August 2011 and could face up to seven years in prison.

Belarusian authorities must end suppression of citizens, says CIVICUS

Johannesburg. 19 May 2011. The recent detention of 14 Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) activists in Minsk is just one more incident in an on-going crackdown on civil society in Belarus, said CIVICUS: World Alliance for Citizen Participation today. The arrests came as local LGBT groups were gathering in Minsk to commemorate the International Day of Anti-Homophobia on 17 May.

According to the Belarus Helsinki Committee, at approximately 3:15 a.m. on 20 December, government personnel arrested ten members of the Viasna Human Rights Center in central Minsk, detaining lawyers - including Valentin Stefanovich and Vladimir Labkovich - who were in the process of analysing data from 600 election observers from across the country. The previous night, the Chairman of Belarus Helsinki Committee, Aleh Hulak, was also arrested and detained by security personnel during a post-election demonstration in Nezavisimosti Square.
